Why I Won’t Be Adjusting You

If you’ve been to more than a few yoga classes, chances are that you’ve been physically adjusted at one time or another. The teacher will come to your mat and use his or hands to modify (for example) your stance, or your foot placement, or the extension of your arm. In a perfect world, the teacher would ask for your permission first… both because it’s just good manners (hello, personal space), and also for issues of safety. But more on that later. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always happen. Out of the handful of times I’ve gotten adjusted, I was only asked once.

Every teacher is going to have his or her own personal stance on the issue, and while it’s not something I can recall ever making a conscious decision about, unless it’s requested I will not be doing any manual adjustments. Here are just a few reasons why:

1. Personal preference. I’m not a huge fan of having it done, so it would only stand to reason that I wouldn’t want to do it to someone else. With a couple of notable exceptions, the majority of times I’ve gotten adjusted it has broken my concentration, made me more self-conscious, and served more to interupt the “flow” of my practice than it did to actually help.

2. Verbal cues can be just as effective. The great thing about verbal instruction as opposed to manual manipulation is that the entire class can hear and benefit, without anybody feeling singled out. If I look out into the class and see that someone could use some clarification, simple reminders like, “Your back foot is turned to 90 degrees… shoulders are down and back… palms are facing the ceiling…” are usually all that are needed.

3. It can be dangerous. There’s often a very good reason someone’s in the position that they’re in. I have heard horror stories: overzealous teachers causing pain, soreness, or outright injury. My own personal story took place about 10 months ago. I was nursing (an as yet correctly diagnosed) shoulder injury, which I’d dutifully noted on my waiver when I signed into class. My range of motion on that side was fairly limited, but I was listening my body, paying attention to my pain level, and doing what I could. My arm was extended overhead at about half the rotation of where it “should” have been had I had a healthy shoulder… and before I knew what was happening, there were hands on my arm, gently – but quickly and forcibly – twisting, twisting, twisting. It hurt immediately, but not as much as it would hurt later that night. I don’t want to go as far as to say that that is what actually caused the surgery I would eventually need a couple of months later… but it surely couldn’t have helped.

If you’re not understanding something, and/or would like physical assistance in getting aligned so you can better feel what it is you’re aiming for, by all means! Ask, and I’d be happy to help. If you don’t need it: I’ll watch, I’ll guide, I’ll give verbal instructions… but unless you tell me otherwise, I’ll gladly keep my hands to myself.

I’m too old/fat/out-of-shape to do yoga

A friend of mine recently expressed an interest in getting started in yoga.    She’d never tried it before, but she said she’d always wanted to.

“Great,”  I told her.  “You’ll love it!”

“I just need to lose some of this weight first,” she answered, telling me that she couldn’t possibly do yoga until she’d dropped thirty pounds.

Wait… what?    Barring any medical restrictions (and even then, there are modifications for almost everything), being overweight is never a reason not to do yoga.  In fact, it’s just pretty much just the opposite:  yoga will make you more in touch with your body, more comfortable with your body, and help you lose the weight that you need to lose.   And if this guy can do it, anyone can.

“Okay,” she conceded.  “But I feel like I’m so old…”

Tao Porchon-Lynch is still teaching yoga at 93 years old.  There’s no such thing as being “too old” for yoga.

“I’m not flexible either,” she persisted. “At all.”

Can I talk about flexibility for a minute?  A lot of people think that you need to be flexible to do yoga, and/or that people who are already flexible are going to naturally be better at it.  I used to think the same thing.  And while it’s true that yoga will help you become more flexible if that’s something you’re desiring, flexibility in and of itself means nothing.

I’m a naturally limber person.  I’m also a naturally clumsy person.  I have a hard time telling right from left.  I don’t always know where my body is in space.  Sometimes I find that being flexible actually hinders more than helps when I’m learning new poses… my arms and legs tend to lose the integrity of the pose and just start doing their own crazy wayward things.  I have to consciously focus more on awareness, remind my body to listen to my brain, and bring everything back to where it’s supposed to be.

When I was at my training retreat in July, I was somewhat of a mess.  I was injured, discouraged, hadn’t done any yoga (or really, any physical exercise at all) for an entire month, and I was ten pounds out of my personal comfort zone.  I was out-of-balance, out of touch with my own body, and just generally disconnected.  So I know that feeling of, “I can’t do this!”  I do.

But here’s the thing:  Yoga forgives all of that.  It takes an overweight, out of shape, inflexible, too flexible, old, young, ailing body and meets it right where it’s at.  It makes it stronger.  It makes it healthier.  It makes it more coordinated.  It makes it more in tune with both mind and soul.  It makes it beautiful, from the inside out.

Even for a naturally limber and naturally clumsy person like me.

Recipe: Raw Balls

These balls are half dessert, half power snack, and 100% delicious.  They are adapted from Alicia Silverstone’s book, The Kind Diet.  They are perfect if you have a sweet tooth like me, and they are very rich…. so just one goes a long way!

1/2 cup walnuts

1/2 cup pitted dates

1/2 cup raw carob powder or cacao powder

1/2 cup maple syrup

1/2 cup almond butter

1/2 tsp vanilla

1/4 tsp sea salt

1/2 cup almonds

2 cups finely shredded unsweetened coconut

Place the walnuts in a food processor and process until coarsely ground.  Add the dates and pulse until well combined.  Add carob powder, syrup, almond butter, vanilla, and salt.  Process until everything is thick and smooth.  Add the almonds last, and pulse until they are incorporated into your desired consistency.  You can leave them in crunchy chunks, or process until they are smaller.

Form your mixture into golf-ball sized balls.  Roll in coconut, and freeze until hardened.   Eat them straight from the freezer.

Should Christians Do Yoga?

The first time I took a yoga class was over a decade ago.  I was a new mom looking for ways to re-center, and it was something that I’d always wanted to try.  When my parents gave me some money for my birthday, I decided to treat myself and sign up for a class.    It was nothing fancy… just a basic beginner class at the same Y where I took Mommy and Me classes with my son, but I will always remember it fondly as the class that introduced me to what would become a lifelong passion.

The day after my first class, when I was still feeling that loosy-goosy, super relaxed, post-yoga “high”, I mentioned to a friend that I’d started doing yoga and how much I loved it.  She just looked at me for a long time, before she finally asked,

“Isn’t it a bad idea for Christians to do yoga?”

I couldn’t answer her.  I mean I literally couldn’t answer her.  I had never heard that before, and I couldn’t imagine what might have been wrong with what I’d done the night before.  Plus, to be honest, I was a little bit irritated that I’d shared something I was excited about and she’d promptly rained on my parade.

I did the only thing I could think to do on the spot:  I changed the subject.

I finished out that 8 week class, and spent the next several years just practicing on and off (mostly off) at home.  Then about three years ago, I was called to become a yoga teacher.  I have no other words to describe it.  I was called.  I fought it too, with lots of excuses.  Too much money… too much time… my kids were too young… I’m too much of an introvert… I don’t like getting in front of people.  But the more I resisted, the more strongly it was laid on my heart.   I felt like I had no choice but to eventually answer, “All right, all right, I’ll do it!”

As I went through the 250 hours of training this year, I finally learned – with great clarity I might add – both the answer to my friend’s question so many years before, and the concerns that may have prompted her to ask it.

Yoga originated in the Hindu religion – I begin with this one simply because it’s the easiest to answer.  This is false.  Archaelogical findings show that yoga actually predates all of the world’s major religions.  While Eastern religions did eventually adapt and codify yoga for their own purposes, it did not begin there.  This is an important distinction to make, because many Christians fear yoga as something that was born out of another religion… which just isn’t the case.

Yoga is a spiritual practice that is meant to align yourself with Eastern religions, the occult, etc.   Yoga itself is a methodology, not a theology.  How it’s employed is up to each individual participating.  For example, as a Christian, I believe in prayer.  But I know that Christians are not the only people who pray!  Other religions pray, as well as some people who align themselves with NO particular religion.  While the method of the prayers may be similar, our theologies that we bring to the prayers make them different.   So it is with yoga.   Just like prayer, yoga’s benefits can be used by any (or no) religion at all.

The word “yoga” means to yolk, and join yourself with other Gods.  The word “yoga” comes from the Sanscrit word, “yug” which is translated as “to harmonize,” to “bring together,” or yes, to “harness or yoke.”  Again, I think it’s important to remember that who or what we’re joining with is up to us.  I find the meaning of the word ‘yoga’ beautiful, and think it perfectly illustrates both the coming together of mind, body, and soul; and, as a Christian, the coming together of myself and God.

The postures are meant to praise and worship other Gods.   This is where a lot of people get lost, but I promise it’s not that confusing.  Many Christians who fear yoga use this as their basis.  “The postures were created to worship other Gods.  The postures are inviting evil forces into your heart.  Etc.”   First, as I stated in point one, the postures were not created for that purpose.  Secondly, there is nothing inherently spiritual about a downward dog (or a warrior or a sun salutation) either for good or evil, unless you so decide.   The meanings of the poses come from the intent and the heart of the participant.  Just because one person – or one religion – assigns a certain spiritual meaning to a posture, it does not mean that that meaning then applies to me whether I like it or not.  I’ll be completely honest…. when people tell me that Christians should avoid yoga because we might “accidentally” be worshipping a sun god or a hindu deity, or inadvertently  joining ourselves with some kind of cult, my first thought is this:  Is your faith really so weak that you fear you have no control over what enters your heart, that you have no control over who or what you do or do not worship?  Yes, eastern religions have used yoga postures as part of their worship.  And I don’t mean to make light of it, because I respect that it’s a genuine concern for some Christians,  but… so what?  If some crazy, weird cult sprang up, and decided that as part of one of their spiritual rituals, they would sit naked in a circle in a sweat lodge and eat pizza… would that mean that Christians would then need to forever avoid pizza?  That pizza would suddenly cease to be crust, sauce, and cheese and instead become a harbinger of evil forces?  Of course not.  That’s ridiculous.

Yes, it’s ridiculous.  Pizza is just pizza.

And yoga is yoga.  It is one of the best ways to connect with, stretch, and strengthen your body… while at the same time quieting your mind, calming your spirit, and finding peace in your heart.  As a Christian, I’ve never found yoga to be at odds with my faith.   Just as importantly, I’ve never worried that it would turn me away from God.  In fact, when I’m there on my mat; when I’m finally STILL; when I’ve been able to quiet my mind and actually meditate on something of my choosing (and meditation by the way, is mentioned numerous times in the Bible) what I experience is very much the exact opposite.

It’s like coming home.

Recipe: Homemade Almond Milk

I always loved the *idea* of homemade almond milk, but for some reason the prospect always struck me as tedious and time-consuming.

Well, I finally made it for the first time this week, and it is ridiculously and almost embarrassingly easy (and oh so much better than its store-bought counterpart!)  Because you make it yourself, you have total control of how sweet it is and how it’s flavored.

The only equipment you need is a good blender and something fine to strain your milk in.  I used this reusable nut bag, which works great, or you can use a fine mesh strainer, cheese cloth, or even some disposable paint strainer bags.

Here’s what you need:

1 Cup Almonds

3 Cups Water, plus more to soak in

3 Dates, pitted and soaked (or another natural sweetener such as raw honey) – optional

1/8 tsp (or to taste) pure vanilla extract – optional

Put the almonds in a bowl, and cover them with a couple of cups of water.  Let them soak in the refrigerator overnight.  Drain off the soaking water, rinse the almonds, and add them in your blender along with the 3 cups fresh water and sweetener and flavoring if you choose.   Blend it all really well, and then strain.  Put the milk in a pitcher or another container that can be covered and refrigerated.  Save the pulp that’s leftover in a ziploc bag, and then head to almondpulp.com to find a yummy raw recipe to use it in.  (Might I suggest the cinnamon mocha crinkles?)
